Education should be about more than conveying knowledge to students; the classroom should also be a place for students to become passionate about learning throughout their life. As a professor, it is my job to help students find this passion. It is also my job to build my students up, instilling them with the self-confidence to continue the learning process and to communicate their passion with others. I seek to help students find this zest through hands-on, interactive projects that allow them to learn and apply new content while also making connections between the classroom and problems that scientists encounter every day. Additionally, these projects encourage group collaboration, which strengthens the students' confidence, and they allow a safe space where students can make mistakes and learn through investigation. Lastly, I aim to make a space where all students feel welcome. I acknowledge that my experiences may be vastly different than those of my students; however, our collective experiences and approaches can help all of us learn and synthesize new solutions to the engineering challenges our society faces. |
